In an unexpected twist of events, the Spanish team managed to out Italy 4-2 and reach the quarter-finals for UEFA 2008 in 24 years. Germany, categorized as another underdog when pit against the football stronghold that is Portugal, managed to come up tops with the final score of 3-2. In a previous match, Turkey unexpectedly ousted Croatia 3-1, scoring three massive goals in a row thus proving critics wrong that they CAN deliver and that they are not depending on luck to win the UEFA 2008.

The entire planet Earth is on its toes happily anticipating the arrival of the new iPhone 3G. Not only will it be affordably priced at $199 but it will also boast of a higher download speed of 1.4Mbps compared to a miniscule 135Kbps on EDGE network. Compared to the old iPhone, the new version will sport a plastic back. The overall form of the iPhone 3G is also sleeker and thinner. Many potential users are also shying away from the iPod Touch due to the iPhone 3G’s much lower price tag but they should reconsider as one needs to pay AT&T $70 a month to enjoy its services, unlike iPod Touch owners. A last nugget of juicy information is out on the Internet that AT&T has agreed to pay Apple up to $325 for each AT&T-enable iPhone sold.

It is official: two of the World Wide Web’s largest search entities Yahoo! and Google are set to rock the world with its future partnership. They will cooperate after agreeing on a search advertising deal. So shaken were the public and other investors that Yahoo Inc.’s shares plummeted down 3 percent in June 2008 shortly after the merger is announced. As if that is not enough, it further dropped 16 percent after Yahoo Inc. refused to foster ties with another Internet giant, Microsoft. Investors are concerned that Yahoo! will eventually lose out to Google but its president assures them that they will profit via less common search terms.

With the introduction of Gmail Labs, 13 ground breaking experimental ideas have been unleashed. These features can be accessed by all UK and US English users. Those who are using Google Apps but do not want to take advantage of the brand new features can turn it off under Domain Settings. Google assures users that should a feature ever fail or needs tweaking, all it takes are ample feedback and Google will fix the bugs in no time. An amusing addition to the slew of Gmail Labs features include Old Snakey, a game that lets users indulge in old school game of Snake in Gmail!

Barack Obama successfully defeated ex-First Lady Hillary Clinton to cinch the position as the only Democratic candidate on his path to become the US President. Should he succeed, Obama will be the first Afro-American individual to claim the title as the US President. Many loyal supporters including Africans have rallied for his victory and have likened Obama to the late Martin Luther King who was known to campaign for the Americans’ civil rights. He will duke it out against Republican John McCain for a final match before the American public decides who will be fit to govern their beloved country.

Less than a fortnight after Myanmar was hit by Cyclone Nargis that claimed the lives of many innocents, China was thrust into the spotlight as it was struck by a destructive earthquake. This calamity has caused 70,000 lives to be lost and many more have not been found due to the natural disaster. As if that is not enough, the host of the Olympic Games 2008 also suffered from terrible snowstorms and fierce floods in southern China. The quake hit the province of Shaanxi and Gansu the hardest but people are slowly picking up their lives where they left off and are beginning to recover from the tragedy. It will take a couple of months before the structures in these areas will be fully rebuilt.

2 May, 2008 was a black letter day for Myanmar as the raging Cyclone Nargis struck the country, leaving a trail of unimaginable devastation. Almost 150,000 dwellers died and that is only a mere estimation. Homes were destroyed, lives were wrecked but most importantly for the already food deprived people, their crops were badly affected. The people of military-ruled Myanmar are feeling the pinch much harder than before and with the advent of the catastrophe, what little food source left has risen astoundingly high in price. Fortunately the United Nations World Food Programme has stepped in to offer much needed aid in the form of rice rations but it is hoped that the junta will relent and cooperate so that more foreign NGOs can enter the country and offer assistance to the victims.
